Writing DBQs can seem daunting at first, but after you write a few they start to flow more freely. This page is organized into 2 categories: General DBQ Suggestions 2. It is important to mix your questions with observational, basic comprehension, and critical thinking questions, especially with younger students or students less experienced with DBQs.
Mix them up in order to help your students build good critical think and analytical skills. Always include a question that requires the student to assess the author of the document and any biases that author may be projecting on the document, affecting the truthfulness of its message.
When examining documents or images, ask questions that reporters ask: These questions are from Project Look Sharp: What kind of document is it? Who was the original audience? How is the document's message tailored to that audience?
Who made or sponsored the message and for what purpose? How current, accurate, credible is the information in the message? What is left out of this document that might be important to know? When and where was the document produced? For every document, write questions that extend thinking beyond basic reading comprehension and even the basic forms of the skills addressed in the TEKS.
This will not only increase general reading comprehension and critical thinking skills, but these skills will improve student prob ability to successfully apply specific TEKS.
To extend student thinking incorporate questions about each document that challenge students to develop 1 empathy with the subjects in the documents to feel inside the same thing the subjects feel--this is not the same as sympathy and 2 an understanding of agency present in the documents what are the choices available to to subjects, what did they debate in order to make their decisions.
Throughout this page you will see questions like empathy and agency questions that may not seem to support the selected TEKS at first, but while helping model for students how to think critically about a reading text and historical circumstance before they arrive at a conclusion, these questions will help students answer the DBQs directly related to the reading TEKS.
